Community Empowerment news: Creating Active Communities in Yeovil, North Taunton and Minehead
We’re leading a partnership project called ‘Creating Active Communities’ which is set to receive a share of £15 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund. The project will help more local people into sport.
‘Creating Active Communities’ sets out to enable more young people and adults to take part in fun and healthy sports activities. Developed with Somerset Activities & Sports Partnership (SASP), Tone Leisure, Age UK Somerset, 1610 and local communities, the project will run for three years, starting in Yeovil, North Taunton and Minehead.
Through the work that we do in communities, we’re aware of barriers to people taking part in sport, so we’re absolutely delighted to receive this funding. Local people of all ages have already told us about activities they’d like to try – from canoeing and cycling to flexercise and gym circuit training.
We’re recruiting a Community Sports Co-ordinator ready for an autumn start and look forward to working with partner agencies to make a real difference together.
Local sports providers will take opportunities out to communities, giving people the chance to try activities with their neighbours and build confidence and ability. Training will enable people to develop their skills as coaches and sports activators in their own communities.
Mike Diaper, Sport England Director of Community Sport, said: "It’s great to be working with innovative projects, like Creating Active Communities, to offer people the chance to get into sport in a way that best suits them. I’m particularly pleased that more than half the funding is going into projects in deprived areas, helping more people develop a lifelong sporting habit.”
